Andrew’s Oak Tree

10/7/2023

This year marks Andrew’s 30th birthday and 16 years since he went missing in 2007.  I think he was 10 when he read somewhere that an oak tree kept in a tub would become a fully mature tree, but in miniature because the roots were constrained from growing fully.  At the time, I picked up a few acorns and we planted these in a tub to test this theory.  Half a dozen grew and I gradually replanted them over the years, keeping one for our own back garden.  Last year, it produced its first acorns, showing that, while still only about 6 feet/2 metres tall, it has matured as Andrew predicted.

Almost every day since he disappeared, I have struggled with crippling anxiety and depression, to the extent that it is barely possible to function.  No matter how many years pass by without him, those feelings never change and are often intensified by seemingly small things that would not have been a problem before he vanished.  After all the searching, appealing, praying and hoping, we all still miss him intensely every single day; it never seems to become easier.

In the Missing People offices, there is a “tree”, pictured here: one of the leaves is inscribed with his name and our message to him.  There are too many inscribed leaves on this tree, too many loved ones missed each and every day.  There are too many families left bewildered, wondering, searching, hoping and praying; longing for an answer, any answer, no matter how difficult that answer could be.
Missing People have tirelessly supported us through these years, as they do with so many families.  In addition, every month sees appeals that help find missing children and adults and the helpline (116000) is available to those thinking of going missing or that have gone missing and find themselves in difficulty.  As Andrew’s oak tree bears the fruit of the acorn, we hope that awareness of his case bears the fruit that others are helped to find positive solutions in their lives and that other families are spared the pain that too many of us live with every day.

If you feel able to help with a donation, no matter how small, know that you will be part of a lifeline to many families by giving here:

Missing People

Thank you.

Dear Kevin, Glenys and Charlotte. I'm thinking of you all, and can't imagine how you must be feeling, especially tomorrow, 10th July, on Andrew's 30th Birthday. I know missing people are such a wonderful charity that help so many people. I wish someone somewhere could help you and your family by bringing much needed answers. A beautiful story about Andrew's tree. And the first acorn it produced was so close to Andrew's 30th Birthday. Please take care, stay strong, support eac other, and never give up hope.

Aaaaw!
My heart breaks for you and I often think about Andrew - even though I did not know you or him.
Please know that there are so many people that are with you and your family and try to keep strong. You were the best parents Andrew could had imagine and I am pretty sure that one day, you are getting the answers you all deserve!
Best regards from Germany, where I heard about the case years ago and include Andrew in my prayers.

Happy 30th Birthday to Andrew! I spoke to you almost 2 months ago via email, I just wanted to let you know you and your family are always in my thoughts and prayers all the time. I pray god keeps giving you the strength to get through this time. I hope you enjoy your time with your grandson I’m very happy for your family I’m sure he brings so much joy. You’ve been the greatest parents to Andrew and have never given up hope all this time. I dedicate the song “starlight” by muse one of my favorite songs and I know he loved that band as well. I hope and pray you get the answers you need, take care Gosden family.❤️🙏

The story of Andrews oak tree somehow gives me hope that Andrew will be found one day. I wish you had the answers you deserve and could just live your life without the constant pain and turning that into a way to raise money to help others. I will donate to the charity on behalf of Andrew and just know with my own grief you inspire me to keep going.

Myself, Glenys, and the rest of the family, would just like to say how heartwarming it is to have these messages of support, especially from around the world. Thank you so much to everyone who thinks of us and of Andrew. We really appreciate the thoughts and prayers and are so grateful that people take the time to express their support.

I remember several years ago driving along a road near where I live and seeing Andrews face on a billboard for missing persons. It stopped me in my tracks as your boy looked so similar to mine, when he was around the same age (he's now nearly 21). As a Dad I cannot imagine the insurmountable suffering you've all endured over the years as a family, but still finding the energy to fight it united head on with hope and love, through what seems a entirity of never ending darkness is quite frankly, incredible.

It's heartbreaking and I'm floored by your inner strength to pull yourself out of it. I'm not religious really, but your true faith that has carried you through this trauma, most would find extremely challenging. I cannot find words really, it's a beautiful thing.

I often think of your lad and hope that one day you'll be reunited and find answers you've waited so long for.

Hope springs eternal.

I just heard about your heartbreaking ordeal and wanted to send some words of encouragement and love to you and your family. Your perseverance in seeking Andrew, in keeping his story in the public and for continuing to remind him that you love him no matter the circumstances are truly inspiring. If every child had parents like you I think the world would be a much better place. Your story is a reminder of how precious our time together with our families is, even in the mundaneness of the day-to-day. Sending hope and love to you and your family, and gratitude for sharing your story.

I so hope you get answers. The unknown is so cruel. I have oak acorns at my house. I will plant some in honor of Andrew.
